Joe was born on December 13, 1930 in Detroit, MI to Herman and Florence Doubet Gunn. He moved to Iowa when he was a teenager and lived with his aunt and uncle, Nell and Horace Baker, until he became an adult. Joe was a 1948 graduate of the former Beaconsfield High School and later graduated from Iowa State University in Ames. He had served time in both California and Japan during those two years.

On June 5, 1954, Joe married Mary Jean Ivers in Des Moines, where they made their home. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Dennis and Janet. Joe was employed as a Department Manager with Farm Bureau Mutual for 15 years, until he retired in December of 1989. Prior to that, he was employed with Preferred Risk Insurance Company for 17 years. He loved to fish and travel. Joe and Mary Jean had spent 13 winters at a RV resort outside of Mission, TX, where they made many friends.
