Obituary

Joseph W. Knight, 92, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Karen Acres Nursing Home in Urbandale. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 9 at the First Christian Church with burial at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Joseph W. Knight was born September 26, 1915 in Des Moines, the son of Joe E. and Catherine (Smith) Knight. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended Drake University. In June 1940 he married Jean Rowena Eyestone and moved into a new home at 6015 University Avenue.

His first job was installing furnaces, then a carpenter, homebuilder, welder at the ordnance plant and then joined the Navy as a metalsmith. He was a concrete inspector for the city of Des Moines, retiring after 17 years. Joe was a Boy Scout Leader and a Veterans Hospital volunteer for 30 years. He was a photographer, Master Gardener, Botanical Center Volunteer, member of the Des Moines Garden Club and built the first Children's Tunnel at the State Fair in the Children's Garden. Joe was a long time Iowa State Fair Exhibitor, where he was known for his prize winning jelly and the recipes he contributed to the State Fair Cook Books. He was a member of First Christian Church since 1937, serving as Sunday School treasurer, doing remodeling projects at the church and the Iowa State Fair Church Restaurant where he also cooked and served meals.

Joe is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jean; his children, June (Les) Nutter, Paul (Sandy) Knight, Patti (Len) Odegaard and his grandchildren.
