Obituary

Joyce Chrystal passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2008, after many months of failing health. Services will be held at 11 am Wednesday, March 12 at First Baptist Church, 8250 NW 62nd Ave in Johnston.

Joyce was born May 21, 1929 near Mabel, MN. Her family moved to Burr Oak, IA a few years later and then to Davenport, IA in the early 1940s. Joyce graduated from Davenport High School and then from the American Institute of Commerce. She worked for a wholesale grocer in Davenport for several years. Joyce was also employed as the office manager for her brother Bob's appliance repair business, and later for the Drivers License office in Davenport.

She married Al Chrystal on May 17, 1954. In 1966, a promotion brought them to Des Moines. For the past five years, they have lived in Johnston.

Joyce is survived by her husband Al; daughter Karen Chrystal, son-in-law Michael Kuehn, and their sons Nicholas and Alec; and son and daughter-in-law James and Yolanda Chrystal and their son Cole. She is also survived by three brothers: Lee Wicks of Mission, KS; Alan Wicks of Melbourne, FL; and Ray Wicks, also of Melbourne, FL.

Joyce was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. Al and Joyce had nearly 54 wonderful years together. After Al's retirement, they enjoyed several years of traveling around the country in their motor home with their dog Lexi, although she never stayed away from her grandsons for too long. Joyce loved her family above all else, and her three grandsons were the light of her life. She was as kind to pets as she was to people, and was adored by her "grand dogs," Holly and Bijou.

For almost half her life, Joyce suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis, a disease that makes every aspect of life difficult. Her uncomplaining strength through years of pain and many surgeries was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Joyce had a strong Christian faith and was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Johnston.

Her family will miss her loving, generous nature, but are comforted by the knowledge that she is now at peace and no longer in pain.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 5:30 to 7 pm on Tuesday, March 11 at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Arthritis Foundation, Iowa Chapter, 2600 – 72nd St., Suite D, Urbandale, Iowa 50322.
