Obituary

Jane Pollak, 87, died October 27, 2009, at the Mayflower Health Center from complications of pneumonia and a stroke. She donated her body to Des Moines University. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines.

Jane was born to Don and Katherine Mullendore in New Windsor, MD, the oldest of 8 children, and raised in Hagerstown, MD. After high school she was a buyer for Bloomingdales in New York City until her marriage to Ed in 1947. Jane and Ed were married for 62 years and raised 5 children. The family moved to Des Moines in 1965. In 2008, Jane and Ed moved to the Mayflower Community in Grinnell.

Jane was an active volunteer throughout her life, especially at Plymouth Church. She worked in the Plymouth nursery until age 80, wrote cards to ill parishioners, and knitted hats and mittens for kids in need. As a Girl Scout Leader, she was named a "Hidden Heroine". She enjoyed social activities, including bridge. She also worked at Younkers until retiring in 1987.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her brothers Edward and Jim Mullendore, and her sisters Betty Whitmore and Carole Neal.

She is survived by her husband, Ed; sons, Fred, Jim, John (Nancy Crowfoot) and Charlie Pollak; daughter, Nancy English; grandchildren, Jim and Heather (George) Muigai and their mother, Eileen Pollak, Deja (Keith Lionetti) Parrent, and Jake (Amanda) English; great grandchildren, Alexandria Rohde, Zack Pollak and Aria Lionetti; sisters, Fran (Jim) Darnton and Alice (Chuck) Thomas; brother, Steve (Jean) Mullendore; and many nieces and nephews. All of her children and their offspring live in or near Des Moines except for son Fred who lives in Ashland, OR, and granddaughter Deja and her daughter Aria who live in Seattle, WA.
