Kathryn Fortune Obituary

Kathryn Kay Fortune, 82, of Altoona, Iowa passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2024.

Kathryn was born February 6, 1942 in Indianola, Iowa to James & Eloise (Enyart) Kirkpatrick. She was united in marriage September 11, 1965 to her life-long partner Denver “Dean” Fortune. They were blessed with 3 children. She was dedicated to her husband & family, nurturing, caring, and very resilient. She never said a cuss word or spoke ill of anyone. She was a lady of few words but words spoken were impactful. She was an excellent cook, and loved to bake. She made amazing cookies and other treats, the neighborhood kids can attest to that. If brownies could be considered contraband, hers were, as well as her famous chocolate upside-down cake. She would always have a hot pot of coffee ready for family and friends that would stop by. She was a big fan of Elvis Presley and enjoyed dancing to his music with her daughter, Michelle. She loved spending time with and caring for her grandchildren. The family had many travel adventures over the years, road trips to the south and west, camping, attending horseshoe and bowling tournaments, and ball games.

Kathryn is survived by her children Michelle Johnson, Denver J. Fortune, and James A. Fortune; grandchildren Sylvia (Paul) Bright, Steven Johnson, Cassie (Josh Bloomquist) Fortune, Jeremy (Casey O’Donnell) Young, and Rachel Young; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Barb Cooper, brother-in-law Frank Goering, brother-in-law Donald (Linda) Fortune, sister-in-law Anita Dyer, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Dean; her parents; brothers Marvin and Lester Kirkpatrick; sisters Audrey Hunerdosse, Wanda Cooper, and Linda Goering.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday July 9, 2024 at Iles Grandview Park Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50317. Visitation will be the same day from 10:00 am until service start time. Interment will immediately follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa next to her husband.

The family invites everyone to join them for a luncheon from 1:30 - 3:30 pm at Now or Later Restaurant, 3750 University Ave, Des Moines, Iowa following the burial service.
