Kay L. South, 73, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, IA. Her Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 PM Monday, January 17, 2022, at Gifts of the Spirit Ministries Fellowship with a visitation beginning at 11 am. Burial will follow at Greenfield Cemetery in Greenfield, Iowa.

Kay was born April 9, 1948, in Clay Center, KS and was adopted by Kenneth and Ethel (Spaulding) Kirlin of Greenfield, IA. At the age of 2, Kay met her future husband, Richard as his grandmother watched both of them. She graduated from Greenfield High School in 1966 and attended AIB, graduating with a 2-year degree in 1968. While in college, Richard and Kay met their lifelong friends, Clark and Pam Holmes. Richard and Kay got married on November 2, 1968, at First United Methodist Church in Des Moines, IA.

Kay worked outside the home until the birth of their son, Eric, who was born in 1972. For the next ten years, she was a stay-at-home mother and when she reentered the work force, she worked in retail. In 1993, Eric married Melanie Geigle and though their marriage did not last, Kay still maintained a close relationship with Melanie and her 3 children: Mersadees, Joshua, and Dustin. Kay had a philosophy of you can’t have too many people to love. In 2006, Eric married his current wife, Sarah who also has a son, Brendan.

On August 16, 2009, Kay found her faith in God. Her husband, Richard passed away in 2010 and after several years of being alone, she met David Moose. David and Kay were together until her death. In May of 2020, Kay found out she has 4 sisters, and 1 brother and she was very excited to find her birth family. Kay enjoyed everything outdoors from gardening to sitting in a lawn chair and watching wildlife. She was an avid reader, loved to be with family and friends, and would do anything for anyone.

Kay is survived by Son, Eric (Sarah) South of Urbandale, IA; Grandchild, Brendan Ver Steegh of Urbandale, IA; Significant Other, David Moose of Bondurant, IA. Sisters, Cheryl Wilson of Clifton, KS; Dianna (Terry) Fleming of Clay Center, KS; Trudy Hess (Mike Hill) of Manhatten, KS; Deb (Steven) Lehman of Clay Center, KS; and Brother, Daton (Liana) Hess of Clay Center, KS. She was preceded in death by Husband, Richard South; Father, Kenneth Kirlin, Mother, Ethel Kirlin; Birth Sister, Terry Fleming; Birth Father, Cyril Hess; and Birth Mother, Avis Hess.

Contributions may be made to the family for a future memorial.
