Obituary

Keith Darrell Banta, 88, passed from this life on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 26, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Keith was born on November 29, 1917 in Des Moines, to Dell and Mae Swanson Banta. He married Namah Ann Smith in 1941, at Bethany, MO. She preceded him in death in 1958. He married Lois J. Jones in Winterset, IA, and she preceded him in death in 1966. Keith later married Betty L. Brickman on April 19, 1986 in Des Moines, where they made their home. Keith was a navy veteran of World War II, serving as Chief Petty Officer until he was honorably discharged on October 23, 1945. He was formerly employed as a Supervisor with Ford Implement Company for nearly 33 years. Following his retirement from Ford Motor Co., Keith was employed with Overhead Door Co., for five years, and later did lots of woodworking after retiring from there.

He was a 50 plus year member of Waveland Park Masonic Lodge, a member of the V.F.W. Post 9662, and the Indianola Heights Christian Church, where he served as Deacon for nearly ten years. Keith loved to ride horses and managed the Christian Center Riding Stables in Grimes for many years. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed golfing in the V.F.W. 9662 Golf league at Woodside also for many years. In 1963, Keith made a ëHole-in-One’ at hole #11 at the Grandview Golf Course. He was also known for his guitar playing in the former F.O.G. Band.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty L. Banta of Des Moines; daughter, Linda B. (Larry) Henry of New Virginia, IA; one sister, Frances (George) Schmidt of Minneapolis, MN; one brother, Wayne I. Banta of Seattle, WA; three step-children, Donnie R. (Betsy) Dunbar of Ponce Inlet, FL, Jimmy A. Dunbar of Des Moines and Dennis L. Dunbar of Topeka, KS; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his first and second wives, Keith was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Ethel Fluke and Beulah Banta.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 25, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to either VFW 9662; Indianola Heights Christian Church; or the Taylor House Hospice.
