Kelly Thomas Berke, 67, passed from this life on Monday, October 6, 2014, at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines. Cremation rites will follow the mass on Friday. A private committal service will take place at a later date at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Kelly was born on October 31, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Alfred Gustov Jr. and LaDonna Mae (Hathaway) Berke. He was a 1964 graduate of Roosevelt High School and later graduated from William Penn College. Kelly served in the U.S. Naval Reserves until November of 1967. He was employed with Urbandale High School.

Kelly was a very independent person who wished to help others more than be helped. He volunteered numerous hours at the YMCA helping children and countless hours at the VA helping those with substance abuse problems. Kelly was always full of laughter and quick with a joke. He would often refer to his nephews as "The Witt Brothers–Dim and Half." In his spare time he would enjoy dinners or coffee with any one of his numerous friends, wager on a racehorse, or test his luck with a slot machine. Kelly was an avid Hawkeye fan. He was most proud of his 28 years as a friend of Bill W.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his sister, Kevin Sue (Mike) Dennis of Urbandale; brother, Kurt (Bill Dodd) Berke of West Des Moines; nephew, Christopher Michael Dennis of Urbandale; aunt, Darlene Miller of Orange, CA; several cousins including, Craig Miller of Anchorage, AL; and a host of many friends. Kelly was preceded into eternal life by his parents and one nephew with whom he had a very close emotional bond, Robert Ryan Dennis.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Walnut Creek Family YMCA or the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines for substance abuse treatment.
