Obituary

L. Joan Hartsuck, 87, died Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Glen Oaks Care Center in Urbandale. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2021, at Iles Westover Chapel, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private inurnment will be held at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines at a later date.

Joan was born January 27, 1934 in Kansas City, MO to James Meryl and Letha Alice (Dockstader) Roney. She grew up in Des Moines and attended North HS. She attended Iowa State University for two years, before joining Northwestern Bell as a service representative. She married Richard Carl Hartsuck on 9/20/1959 in Des Moines and she became a homemaker upon the birth of her daughter Diane.

Joan was very active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, joining in 1954 and was awarded a lifetime membership. She held several officership positions in the sorority. Joan was a member and leader in the League of Women Voters. She was president of the Des Moines chapter from 1976-1978 and the President of the Iowa State chapter from 1989 - 1991. Joan was the Des Moines League of Women Voters Office coordinator from 1975-76, and again from 1978-1986.
She loved cats, and in particular siamese. Joan was passionate about music and participated in the choir at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Des Moines. She and Richard were supporters of the Des Moines Civic Music Association.

Upon Richard’s retirement in 1992, she moved with him to Silverthorne, CO in 1994. She was the music library director at Father Dyer Methodist Church in Breckenridge, CO and an active member of the Breckenridge Choral Society while living in Colorado. She and Richard loved the mountains of Colorado where they hiked and camped in the Rockies and enjoyed watching birds at their many feeders . She moved back to Iowa in 2013, making her home in Urbandale.

Joan is survived by her children, Diane Hausserman, husband Terry, of Boonville, NY and Duncan Hartsuck, wife Jean-Marie, of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren: Rebecca Tringale, husband Anthony, of Syracuse, NY and Rachel Carpenter, husband Matt, of Constableville, NY; and her great-grandchildren, Caleb, Peyton, Taylor all of Constableville, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard and her infant son Douglas.
