Larry McBurney Obituary

Larry Dwaine McBurney, 75, of Des Moines, Iowa, answered His call to come home on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Born on September 17, 1948 in Des Moines, IA, he was a devoted partner to Fran Street and a loving father to Lawrence McBurney.

Larry never encountered a challenge he couldn’t overcome. He survived Polio, overcame homelessness, and created a successful Heating and Cooling business despite leaving school after the 8th grade. He was revered on the job site and often referred to as the “Tin Man” due to his ability to layout duct work in a house no matter how complicated it may be.

When Larry wasn’t on the jobsite, he could be found in the garage working on a project or in big blue watching the NASCAR and/or NHRA races. His love for classic cars kept him busy in the garage and eternally on the hunt for the next car part he needed, no matter how rare it might be. He spent hours teaching his love for HVAC and cars to his son and those he held closely like his own children.

He is survived by his son, Lawrence (Luisita) McBurney of Urbandale, his grandchildren, Cayley and Caleb McBurney and Kenneth John Thompson; his partner, Fran Street of Des Moines and her children, Eric (Anna) Hocking, Anthony Hocking, and Trinity (Jill) Goodell; grandchildren, Landon and Gabbi Hocking; and many friends he considered part of his extended family.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Lyle McBurney and Virginia Squire.

A gathering for friends and family will be held from 5-7pm, Friday, August 2, 2024 at Iles Westover Chapel. A vigil service with a time for sharing will follow beginning at 7pm.
