Obituary

Larry Dean Hawbaker was born June 22, 1936 at home in Adel, IA to Donald L. and Edythe (Williams) Hawbaker. He entered into eternal rest at the age of 77, on December 4, 2013. He had been in failing health following a stroke in 2004.

Larry started school in Adel, moved to Charles City for nine years and returned to Adel, where he graduated in 1954. He enlisted in the US Air Force after high school. After four years in the military, he attended Iowa State and Northwest Missouri State Colleges. He married Marilyn Towns from Redfield, IA on August 3, 1958, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.

Larry worked mainly in agricultural related businesses. He owned and operated a custom fertilizer and herbicide business in Dallas Center. He retired from his farm operation north of Redfield in 2006.

Larry's legacy is his family, his three children being the pride of his life. The two most personal accomplishments in Larry's life were 38 years of sobriety and playing football for the Adel Tigers, where he was the state's leading ground gainer from the line of scrimmage his senior year .

Over the years, Larry enjoyed camping with his family, bowling, being a movie buff, a crossword enthusiast, grocery shopping, playing cards and cribbage, raising and racing thoroughbred racehorses, vacations in Arkansas, winters in Texas and visiting with anyone. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn of Dallas Center and their three children, Mark (Amy) Hawbaker, Dallas Center, Michael (Sarah) Hawbaker, Redfield and Meredith (Brian) Mason, Centerton, AR; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Sandra Caffrey, Hernando, MS and brother, Terry Hawbaker, Atchison, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and brothers, Jerry and Tim Hawbaker; sister-in-law, Verna Hawbaker and brother-in-law Roger Caffrey.

Visitation will be after 2:00p.m., with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2013 at Iles Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Adel. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery, Dallas Center.
