Obituary

Larry Gene Leonard, 85, passed away Friday, November 18, 2022 at Independence Village of Waukee. Funeral services will be 11 am Friday, November 25th at Iles Westover Chapel where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will follow at Waukee Cemetery.

He was born to Henry and Alice Leonard, residents of Waukee, on September 15, 1937. Larry graduated from Waukee High School and Drake University. Larry married Donna Wilkins on April 15, 1967 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was employed in St. Louis for an insurance company for four years and for 32 years at Principal Financial Group in Des Moines before retiring in 1999.

Larry played tennis year round following his retirement. He enjoyed playing outdoors in Iowa and also in Mesa, AZ during the winter months. He was a member of the West Des Moines Elks and attended Olivet Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Nicholas. Larry is survived by his wife, Donna, daughters, Christine (Barry) Knudson of Omaha, NE, Diane (Michael) Neubauer of Des Moines, son, David (Michelle) Leonard of Newnan, GA, and sisters, Nancy (Wayne) Erdman of Waukee and Linda (Larry) Anderson of Chicago. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Mason, Grace, Meghan, Emily, Owen, Jack and Elijah.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
