Obituary

Larry Gerald Long, 73, passed away at home on August 1, 2022. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm, Friday, August 5, 2022 at Iles Westover Chapel. A family graveside service will be held at 11am, August 6, 2022 at Glendale Cemetery.

Larry was born on September 28, 1948 to Clarence Gerald and Mary Ellen (Jones) Long in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Tech High School. Following high school, he served 6 ½ years in the US Navy aboard the USS Stimson and USS Polk submarines. He later received an associate’s degree from DMACC.

Larry married the love of his life, Cherie Joanne Bach on May 31, 1969. During their 53 years of marriage, he enjoyed the ocean, time with his family, and his pet dog, Molly. He also enjoyed rooting for the underdog in sports and in life and doing for others without recognition or credit when possible. He was honored to be a veteran. He was a member of the VFW Post 9127, American Legion Post 374 and Disabled American Veterans and contributed to the Animal Rescue League.

Larry worked for the United States Postal Service at the bulk mailing center for 30 years. He loved the friends he made while Supervising Tour 1.

Larry is survived by his wife, Cherie; sons, Scott and Cory and grandchildren, Ashley, Austin, Erika and Jessika. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved sister, Mary Jo Newton and a nephew, Gary James Trimble.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.

We love him then, now and always.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
