Obituary

Lawrence "Leo" Vander Linden, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at his home in Des Moines. He was cared for by his loving wife and best friend of 62 years, Phyllis Elaine (Steenhoek) Vander Linden and his children who loved him more than words can express. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines. In agreement with Leo's wishes, cremation rites will follow visitation and no services will be held. A private committal service will take place at a later date.

Leo was born October 6, 1931 in Oskaloosa, IA. Later he attended school in Lacey, IA, where he played baseball and basketball. He graduated in 1949. During this time, he met the love of his life, Phyllis, and they were married on January 30, 1952. Shortly after, Leo was called to serve his country. During his two years in the Army, he was stationed in Fort Hood, TX and was later deployed to Grissom, Germany.

After an honorable discharge, he worked hard in various capacities supporting his family. In 1960, he began his career at Lorenz and Jones Marine Distributors. In 1996, Leo retired from L and J after 36 years of devoted service. In retirement, Leo and Phyllis found passion in antiquing, flea markets, traveling to their children's homes in Oregon and Florida, as well as supporting their grandchildren's various activities. He loved watching sports and participating in football and basketball pools, and he was pretty good at it too.

Leo and Phyllis had three sons, Richard (Micki) Vander Linden of Salem, OR, Don (Lee) Vander Linden of Des Moines and Darrell (Sue) Vander Linden of Urbandale; and one daughter, DeeAnn (Kevin) Vander Linden-Taylor of Orange Park, FL; There are nine grandchildren, Autumn, Erica and Garret (Salem, OR), Christine and Jessica (Des Moines), Ellen and Hailey (Des Moines and Jacksonville, FL), and Kevin Jr. and Kyle (Orange Park, FL); and eight great-grandchildren, Jade, Caden, Avery, Leo, Natalie, Hayden, Jocelyn, and Evelyn that will miss him dearly. Leo was a devoted family man. He was very proud of his family and expressed his love to each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Leo is survived by his wife, Phyllis; four children; sister, Joanne Lins; two brothers, Gary and Robert; and his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Helen (Dusenberry) Vander Linden; and one great-granddaughter, Ava Kay.

Leo was a good man and a true gentleman; he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Leo was a soft, yet tough and sincere man. He was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor and teacher; often described as thoughtful, compassionate, intelligent and rich with love and friends.
