Leo Charles Butcher, 86, passed from this life on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at his home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 20, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Leo was born on September 14, 1920 in Ellston, Iowa to Glen and Fern Rose Buell Butcher. He was an army veteran of WWII during the European Theater, until he was honorably discharged. On March 27, 1943, Leo married Mary Hacker at Grant City, MO. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Barbara. Leo had lived in Ellston for 32 years, before moving his family to Des Moines 54 years ago. In 1985, he retired after 35 years of service with the U.S. Post Office, as a mail clerk.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 0374; NARFE – Chapter 148; Postal Credit Union and the Tuesday Postal Retiree Lunch Group. Leo traveled extensively abroad and 49 U.S. States. He and Mary spent their last 15 winters in Arizona. He enjoyed caring for his lawn and flowers; making wood crafts, especially building bird houses; and watching sports. Most of all, Leo loved spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all the neighborhood children.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Mary Butcher of Des Moines; daughter, Barbara Heaberlin and her husband, Jerald of Knoxville, IA; two grandsons, Brad Heaberlin and his wife Abby of Columbia, IA and Jeff Heaberlin of Knoxville; two great-grandchildren, Cole and Emma Heaberlin of Columbia; sister, Maxine Edwards and her husband Carroll of Urbandale; sister-in-law, Mabel Fierce of Osceola, IA; and a host of many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to either Hospice of Central Iowa or Kids With a Wish.
