Obituary

Leora Javern, the daughter of James and Rhonda Nervig, was born on September 24, 1925, in Story County, Iowa. She died at her home from complications of cancer on September 25, 2004. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 29, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Madrid. Burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.
Leora was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. She graduated from Sheldahl High School.
Leora and Marvin Carlson were united in marriage on May 1, 1948, in Grundy Center, Iowa. They had seven children. Several years later, they were blessed to welcome Sue as their eighth child.
Leora dedicated her life to being a wife, a mom, and a homemaker. I addition, she had jobs at the Slater Creamery, the Madrid Lutheran Home, and the Iowa State food service. During her married life, the family lived on several farms in Boone County. For the past ten years, Marvin and Leora have made their home in Madrid.
Leora had a servant’s heart in all she did. It was simply her nature to put the needs and desires of others ahead of her own. She always found joy in helping others.
Leora was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Rachel Circle in Madrid, as well as many volunteer and social organizations. She liked to bake, crochet, and read. She especially was known for baking countless dozens of cookies for her family. She loved spending time with her friends. Above all, she treasured being involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Leora is survived by her husband, Marvin, and their children: Ron (Vicki) of Madrid; David (Debbie) of Camdenton, Missouri, Darrell of Madrid; Janet (Jim) Hurley of Waverly, IA; Sue (Mike) Rinker Nowels of Madrid; Rhonda (Dennis) Smeltzer of Woodward; Patti (Randy) Pruismann of Bondurant.
Grandchildren include Hollie Wicker, Bret Carlson, Whitney Carlson, Michelle Carlson, Nichole Hartung, BJ Carlson, Alicia Carlson, Tim Hurley, Staci Becker, Natalie Nowels, Lisa Nowels, Ryne Pruismann, Dewey Pruismann, and Ryley Pruismann. Great-grandchildren include Logan Wicker, Brandon Carlson, Olivia Carlson, Michael Hurley, and Christian Becker. Step great-grandchildren include: Taylor, Luke, Elle, and Gabe Godwin; John and Blake Hartung; McKenzie, Alyssa, and Tjaden Smeltzer.
Leora also is survived by her brother Leo (Sylvia) Nervig of Kelley, as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Leora was preceded in death by her son, Kenny (1994), her parents, and a brother, Donald Nervig.
