Obituary

Leslie Charles Secor of Altoona, Ia passed away from cancer peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Wednesday August 7th, 2024. He passed very quickly, with very little advanced knowledge of how seriously ill he was.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday August 14th, 2024, at 1:30pm. It will be located at Glendale Cemetery on 56th and University. It is open to all and we would welcome anyone that knew and loved him and would like to pay their last respects or just want to support our heartbroken family.

Once inside the cemetery, follow the road west to the last road at the back of the cemetery. From there turn right and follow along the back road. At the second road, turn right again and you should see the service tent. Please sign the guest book so our family can properly thank you later. Please no jeans or t-shirts.

Leslie was born on July 30, 1938 in Waterloo, Iowa to Kenneth Secor and Nadine Larson. He was born totally blind and was sent to the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton, Iowa, which was a boarding school for specialized education. In high school, he loved wrestling and was a wrestler on the team. After graduation, he moved to Des Moines for a job opportunity and more specialized training at the Commision for the Blind. He married Betty Ward in July of 1961, and started a new job and their family. They were married 59 years before she passed on in 2020.

He worked cutting sheet metal for 30 years at W.P. Johnson and Co. and was laid off when his company was bought out. He then worked another 15 years at Scottish Rite Park nursing home before retiring at 69 years old. He loved shopping, any electronic gadgets, going to church on Sunday, and was an avid sports fan with pro football closest to his heart. His heart belonged to the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. He loved to listen to the Cubbies on the radio because “the commentator’s were better on the radio” and always got more excited the closer it came to NFL training camp in July. He was always up for a good joke and/or goofing around with his grand and great grand kids. He loved life, despite his handicap.

Leslie is survived by one son Leslie A. (Sherrie), one daughter Alice Burgart, one granddaughter Amanda Lang (Luke), and one grandson Chris (Lisa), one great granddaughter Kara Lang, and two great grandson’s Jacks and Jameson Secor and another on the way. Leslie is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty.
