Lilyan T. Stoddard passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2004 at her home on Grand Avenue. Lilyan was born in Steubenville, Ohio and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She came to Des Moines to study at Drake University where she met and married John D. Stoddard.

Lilyan is survived by her sister-in-law, Jane Conkling, and her nieces, Colet Abramovich and Karen Stewart.

For many years Lilyan and her late husband, John, resided in San Francisco and Acapulco, with summer visits to Des Moines. In the early 1990’s Lilyan and John permanently moved back to Des Moines. Lilyan was well known as a gracious hostess and a wonderful person. She enjoyed gardening, and her garden had been noted in “Better Homes and Gardens” magazine.

Lilyan and John Stoddard were a quiet couple who enjoyed traveling the world together. They never sought the limelight. Their gift to build the John Stoddard Cancer Center in 1991 was just a glimpse of what they had in mind to ultimately benefit the charities in central Iowa and beyond.

In 1998 Lilyan’s husband,, John,, passed away. His death set in motion one of the largest philanthropic distributions to date in Iowa. Nearly 80 million dollars was given to 24 charities. In almost every case, John and Lilyan’s gifts were the largest ever received by the charity.

Lilyan enjoyed attending many charitable events and was delighted to see how her and John’s gifts were impacting so many different charities.

In 1999 Lilyan attended Central Iowa Philanthropy Day where John was posthumously honored as the Outstanding Individual Philanthropist. In the true spirit of philanthropy John once said, “One of the reasons I wanted to make more money was so I could give more away.”

Lilyan will be missed by her family, friends and the aides who cared for her in her home.

As per Lilyan’s wishes, there will be no funeral or other service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the John Stoddard Cancer Center 1440 Ingersoll Avenue Des Moines, Iowa 50309 or a charity of choice.
