Obituary

Lola (De Zwarte) Van Weelden was born October 7, 1939, to Marion and Helen (Grootveld) De Zwarte. She passed away July 21, 2021, with her children by her side.

Lola was a graduate of Pella Christian High School where she played basketball.

On June 3, 1958, she was united in marriage to Leroy Van Weelden. They were blessed with four children: Lowell, Lynn, Kelly, and Stuart. Lola could be seen around Pella selling advertising first for the Pella Chronicle and then for the Town Crier. She enjoyed spending time watching her family at sporting events, including Leroy’s fastpitch softball, and the kids’ little league baseball, high school basketball and track. She enjoyed getting together with her regular card group to share pizza, talk, and play some cards. During the summers, Lola was rarely in Pella on the weekends, as she and Leroy would spend time at The Lake of the Ozarks. They loved the area so much that they bought a condo on the water and spent their retirement there. She loved spending time with her grandkids, and the time in the pool always culminated in cherished memories. She was an avid lover of all forms of art and was so proud that all her granddaughters shared her interests.

Those left to honor her memory are her son Lowell (Lisa) of Nevada, IA; daughter Lynn (Bob) Swank of Midlothian, VA; son Kelly (Kim) of Tallahassee, FL; and son Stuart (Amy) of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren Levi (Mindy) Swank, Morgan Swank, Mikala (Peter) Swank-Thompson, Jasmine Van Weelden, and Jager Van Weelden; her great-grandchild Audrey Swank; and her siblings Eloise De Zwarte and Roger De Zwarte.

Lola was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy, and her parents.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions can be directed to hopeministries of Des Moines, IA, (hopeiowa.org).
