Obituary

Lonny was born on October 24, 1944 in Des Moines, IA to Sam and Zena (Seidenberg) Vidis. By the age of 17 he went to live with his sister and her growing family in Michigan. At the age of 26 he returned to Iowa to manage Arnold's Women's Apparel. Lonny spent fifteen years in the women's retail business. Lonny loved the retail business and he took great pride in being able to find that perfect coat or dress that made a woman feel special. Lonny's father, Sam, was a professional tailor. In keeping with his family genes, there wasn't a button he couldn't sew, a dance costume he couldn't mend, or a pair of pants he couldn't hem. After leaving Arnold's in the late eighties, Lonny began his insurance career. At the time of his death he was semi-retired from his insurance business.

Lonny loved his family and friends dearly. He had a great love of animals, reading, wood working, shopping, music, politics, National Public Radio, a hot cup of tea, a good pastry, and a fantastic sense of humor! He will be greeted up in heaven by his beloved Bichon Frese, Nikki, who passed away one day before his master.

Those left to cherish Lonny's memory include his wife, Karla; his daughter, Andrea Holst (Jason) of Bondurant, IA and their daughter, Alana, his only grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Marylan Shapiro of Southfield, MI; brother, Jerry Vidis of Canton, MI; six nieces; Cheri Shapiro (Doug Aberle, of Granada Hills, CA, Alisa Shapiro Rosenberg (Rick) of Chicago, Il, Carrie Shapiro, of Los Angeles, CA, Meghan Hein, of Hammond, LA, Becky Christoffersen (Scott), of Whitewood, SD, and Valerie Towery (Jeff), of Denver, CO; three nephews, Andy Shapiro (Cathy), of Peekskill, NY, Matthew Hein, Hammond, LA, and David Vidis of Denver, CO; and brother-in-law, Rick Hein (Karen). He was an outstanding great uncle to Ruby and Noah Rosenberg and Mollie and Laurel Aberle. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Irvin; two nephews, brother-in-law, Saul Shapiro; Danny Vidis and Sammy Rosenberg.

Lonny was above all else a very special father and Zadie to his only granddaughter, Alana. They enjoyed many special "adventures" together. These adventures would take them to the movies, out to eat, to ride bumper cars, or even just to hang out listening to her mommy's childhood records on the stereo downstairs in his office. Lonny loved going to his niece's house in Chicago, as his family would often gather there to celebrate the Jewish holidays. Surrounding himself with family and sharing a good meal were two things he very much enjoyed.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice in lieu of flowers.
