Lorraine Marie Lockhart died peacefully at home surrounded by family members on Monday June 27, 2011. She fought a courageous 18-month battle against pancreatic cancer.

Lorraine was born on a farm near Decorah, Iowa to Adella D. "Adeline" Shindelar and James Robert Frana. She attended the country school in Winneshick County, Madison Township and completed primary and first grade in one year. From grades two through nine, Lorraine attended the Spillville Public School in Spillville, Iowa skipping the third grade. Since she lived on a farm by Decorah, Iowa, she boarded with the Notre Dame Sisters during the week and went home on the weekends. Lorraine attended Notre Dame Academy in Omaha, Nebraska, from grades ten through twelve, living with the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She graduated from the academy in 1945 at the age of fifteen. One of her fondest memories was winning the Des Moines Register and Tribune Spelling Bee Contest in 1941. Following graduation she worked as a nurse's aid for the Decorah Hospital on a pre-nursing scholarship attended Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa. She then decided to switch her major to teaching while working part-time as a nurse's aide at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton. During summer months, she worked in the Nursery at Mercy Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. Lorraine graduated from Mount St. Clare College in 1948 at the age of eighteen. After graduation she took a teaching position in Vinton, Iowa and taught third grade for two and a half years.

Lorraine was united in marriage to Thomas J. Lockhart from Vinton, Iowa on January 27, 1951 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa and had just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Due to job transfers, they made their homes in Iowa, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Their marriage had so many wonderful memories. Lorraine truly perfected the word "Mother" being a homemaker and giving birth to 16 children.

In 1997 Lorraine began her career as Office Manager for her son, John's Adel Tire and Service business until forced to retire due to health problems in December of 2009. Affectionately known as "Ma Hubbard" to her kids and their friends, she made hundreds of friends working at John's shop and enjoyed every moment!

Lorraine is survived by her husband Thomas of Adel, her children Linda (Ken) Chapman of Adel, Roberta (David) Dang of DeSoto, Thomas (Becky) Lockhart of Sidney, Nancy (Butch) Stone of Wall Lake, Debra Miller and David of Bloomington, Minnesota, Diane (Denny) Hough of Council Bluffs, Paul (Michelle) Lockhart of Adel, Mary (Jim) Littleton of Council Bluffs, Ann Lockhart and Matt of Adel, John (Sandra) Lockhart of Dallas Center, Robert (Deanna) Lockhart of Adel. She has 32 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren with three more on the way. She is also survived by her siblings Leona Whalen, Marian Nobles, Joanne Frana, Madonna Haddy, Arlene (Jack) Brazier, Doretta Frana, Susan Durham, and Wesley Frana. She was preceded in death by her sons Mike, Andrew and Ricky in infancy and adult sons, Jim and Mark; her parents, James and Adella Frana, her brother Alvin Frana and brothers-in-law, William Nobles and Bobby Haddy.

Words cannot express how much we will miss her.
