Obituary

Lota Aileen Pace, 99, of Des Moines died peacefully at her home on April 22, 2013, surrounded by her family. A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday following the visitation. Burial will be at the McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale, Iowa.

Lota, the daughter of Marvin and Lena Wells, was born October 12, 1913, and grew up in Sparta, WI where she attended school and helped on her father's farm. While there she met and married Clinton Sutherland and moved back to Iowa to start a farm of their own. Clinton passed away four short months later.

Lota was the head hostess at Reed's Ice Cream Parlor in Des Moines where she fell in love with Paul D. Pace. They married on November 3, 1940. Paul joined the Coast Guard at the beginning of World War II. Lota followed him coast-to-coast, wherever he was stationed, until the end of the war.

Lota and Paul took in her brother Marvin's children and raised them as their own. Lota was a wonderful homemaker and spent her life nurturing and caring for her brothers, husband and family.

She loved cooking and gardening, writing poetry and planning family vacations. She also loved going to garage sales with her friends in the neighborhood. She was admired by many for her generosity and hospitality.

Lota loved caring for her children and grandchildren and volunteered for many years, reading books to the first grade students at Moore Elementary.

Lota is survived by her husband, Paul Darrell Pace; daughters Linda Shute, Marta (Kenneth) Keiran, and Waneta Dunn; grandchildren Shana (Bradlee) Bauman, Kelsey (Shane) Seay; and great grandchildren Dalton and Presley Marie Bauman. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Francis, Merlin and Marvin; and her children Paul and Dee Dee Wells.

Lota's family depended on her strength and guidance and will miss her dearly. We love you, Sis and Mom.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be shared at IlesCares.com.
