Louis D. Erbstein, 84, Des Moines native and World War II veteran, passed away Monday, October 13, 2008 while under the care of Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House on 56th Street. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Fort Des Moines Chapel. Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Lou attended Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa State University and Georgia Tech University graduating in 1950 as a textile engineer. Married in 1950, Lou rose to be the president of Iowa Fiber Products in Des Moines during the late 1960's.

Colonel Erbstein served as Deputy Post Commander at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin during the early 1970's and he retired from his career working at Fort Des Moines for the Department of the Army in 1993.

Lou avidly volunteered to amateur radio, the Lions Club, as a Polk County Deputy Sheriff, to the City of Windsor Heights and as a board member of the Fort Des Moines Museum. He was a former U.S Army Reserve Ambassador for the State of Iowa.

Lou is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois; sister, Ruth Budish; daughter, Abbie Bush; son, Mark; and two grandchildren, Steven and Elizabeth.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Fort Des Moines Museum or Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House on 56th Street.
