M. Joyce Coon Obituary

Melba Joyce Coon, 97, of Urbandale, IA, peacefully passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her children.

Joyce was born on March 19, 1927, in Brookings, SD, to Levi and Esther (Tank) Bender. She married John B. Coon on June 29, 1947. Most of her married life was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. For many years Joyce was employed as a Merchandising Manager for Bond's of Beaverdale.

A devoted member of her church, Joyce was baptized on April 24, 1927, and confirmed on April 6, 1942. She taught Sunday School and Bible School classes, sang in the church choir, and served on the Altar Guild and Property Committee. Additionally, she was the Wedding Coordinator, Church Council Secretary, and volunteered in the church office. Joyce was also actively involved in Scouting, serving as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, as well as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John in 1994, and her siblings: Robert and Betty Bender, Herbert Bender and Ruth E. Bender.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Harold) Christ, and Steven (Tammy) Coon; her grandchildren, Marchelle (Jeremy) Butrick, Melissa (Sisouphanh) Deuanephenh, Sara (Jason) McStotts, and John R. (Carrie) Coon; as well as her great-grandchildren, Jordan Butrick, Hayden Butrick, Joseph Deuanephenh, David Q. Deuanephenh, Nathaniel Boyd Jr., Sierra Chatham, Levi McStotts, Autumn Coon, Skylar (Joey) Odo, David A. Coon, Hannah (Chris) Ifill, and Lydia Trivette, and a sister-in-law Ruth J Bender.

A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Iles Westover Chapel. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive, IA, with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, IA. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or Blank Children's Hospital.
