Obituary

Mancel “Spike” Jones, 87, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025. A visitation and funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at the Iles Westover Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service to follow immediately at 1:00 p.m.

Spike was born August 10, 1937, in Clark County, IA, to Harry and Ethelene (Moran) Jones. He married Sharon (Querrey) on August 18, 1957. The couple went on to have two children, Julie and Jason. He had a long career in the grocery industry, including being the manager of the first West Des Moines Hy-Vee and co-founder of Remco Ltd before his retirement over 25 years ago. Even after retirement, he continued to be part of the Hy-Vee family and worked part time at the local Hy-Vee.

When the weather was nice, you would find Spike outside playing golf, taking care of his meticulous yard, or enjoying time at the lake house. He loved spending time with his family and many friends, and was always a buddy to the neighborhood children. As an avid sports fan, Spike could be found cheering on the Drake Bulldogs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was also a dedicated member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, Hyperion Club, and Masonic Lodge.

Left to carry on Spike’s legacy are his loving wife, Sharon Jones; daughter Julie (David) Kober; son Jason Jones; grandchildren, Lindsey Owen and Zach Jones; sister Nancy Price; as well as various nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Betty Eddy; and brother Wayne Jones.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
