Obituary

Marcia was born on January 26, 1928, in Des Moines and died on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Taylor House Hospice of renal failure. Marcia's family will receive friends to celebrate her life at the Des Moines Botanical Center, in the Walsh Room, on Sunday, November 1, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m.

She worked as an x-ray and lab technician for quite some time and then as a social worker in effort to help those who could not help themselves. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1946 and attended Drake University. Her lifelong interest in animals was both a hobby and an avocation. She bred Maltese and Vizslas for many years and exhibited them at Dog Shows and Field Trials. This hobby provided much travel and the accumulation of friends around the country. She was active in the Des Moines Kennel Club and over the years the Vizsla Club of America and the American Maltese Club. In 1981, she began judging dogs as a licensed AKC judge. She was a member of the Dog Show Judges of America, Senior Conformation Dog Show Judges and American Dog Show Judges.

Marcia enjoyed nature, wildlife, dogs, horses, gardening, sports and was an avid reader of Civil War History. She enjoyed living in the family home built by her parents in 1930. She was greatly devoted to her children and grandchildren.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Ervalene Brown; her husband, William L. Hostetler; an infant son; her brother, William C. Brown and numerous happy dogs. She is survived by her sons, John L. (Berniece) Hostetler and Curt D. Harvey; her granddaughters, Michelle Harvey Williams, Elizabeth Harvey Johnson, Melissa Ruth Hostetler and Rachel Lea Hostetler; several great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; first cousin, Pat Renaud; third cousin, Louise Rossignol; many fine friends and beloved companion cat, Shadow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
