Margaret (Maggie) R. Laster, 87, of Bickford Cottage in West Des Moines, passed away October 16, 2003 of respiratory illness. She was born October 14, 1916 to Everett Rushing and Vera Swineford. Maggie was a lifelong resident of Des Moines and was married to Donald Laster for 54 years before his death in April of 1993. Maggie missed him every day and they are now together with the Lord.

Maggie will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother willing to share her faith and kind heart to all. Homemaker does not give a true description of a woman who was also involved with many activities such as golf, art and the special time at the family farm in Afton, IA. She also participated in the Iowa Genealogical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Des Moines Golf and Country Club and at one time was co-chair of the Blank Hospital Guild. Future generations of the family will appreciate Maggie's hours of effort in tracing and recording the family genealogy. In addition, Margaret was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Des Moines and was active on the Altar Guild and ECW.

Margaret is survived by her children Sue Sutphin and Don Laster of Des Moines, and Nancy Burke of Nashua, NH; grandchildren Wendy Stone and Todd Sutphin, Jenny Moore, Jessica Laster and Levi Laster of Des Moines, and Josh Burke of Nashua, NH. Her great-grandchildren are Tyler and Ben Stone of Des Moines. Other surviving family members are sons-in-law Ron Sutphin and Jim Burke and daughter-in-law Deb Laster. Maggie has always had a special relationship with her brother-in-law Tom Laster and his wife Nancy, brother-in-law Dick Laster and his wife Jean, and sister-in-law Joan Allen (deceased) and her husband Don Allen (deceased) and their children. In addition, Margaret is also the sister of Ethyl Pettit (deceased) and her husband Virgil Pettit (deceased) formerly of Silverton, OR and their children.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 17 at Westover Funeral Home. A church service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 18 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 24th and Ashworth Road, in West Des Moines. The family wishes to especially thank the staff and friends at Bickford Cottage for their love, friendship and compassionate care.
