Maro was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of the late Peter George and Elpida Kleanthis Anthan, the second of three children. She attended kindergarten at Sherwood Elementary School in St. Joseph.

In 1943, following her father’s unexpected death, the family moved to Kansas City, Kansas to live with her Aunt Kiki and Uncle John Economy. In Kansas City, she attended Central Elementary, Wyandotte High School (1956) and KCK Junior College. Beginning as a child she worked at her aunt and uncle's Chocolate Shop on Minnesota Ave. and at the Electric Theater. As a teenager, she was a member of the choir at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Kansas City, MO.

She continued her education at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Throughout her college years, she worked at the University of Kansas Medical Center for Pediatric Head, Herbert H. Miller, M.D. and Gunnar Proud, M.D.

Following college graduation, she was employed by the Kansas City Kansas Board of Education, and taught kindergarten at Emerson Elementary School in the Argentine District. She also taught first grade at Olmstead Elementary School in Urbandale, IA.

On June 3, 1962, she married Theodore Velman of Des Moines at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. They made their home in Des Moines.

Maro was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and the Ladies of Philoptohos philanthropic society. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and a lifelong member of the Greek Bridge Club of America (GBCOA), which consisted of lifelong friends from Kansas City.

She enjoyed playing bridge, her piano, reading, sewing, embroidering, quilting, knitting, bluegrass music and her four grandchildren. She was a daughter, a niece, a friend, a wife, a mother, an aunt, a sister and a grandmother. She was adored by her four grandchildren and they called her "NeNe."

Surviving is her devoted husband of 43 years, Ted; her daughter, Patti (Matthew) Gliniecki of Hudson, WI and two sons, Stacy (Shelley) Velman and Johnny (Stacy Lynne) Velman of Des Moines; and her four adored and cherished grandchildren, John Theodore and Peter Matthew Gliniecki, and Kalista Frances and Teddy Anastasios Velman. Maro is also survived by two brothers, George Peter Anthan of Leawood, KS and TP Anthan.
