Marie Ellis, 85, died peacefully, Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center from complications of cancer. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, October 31 at the First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Center, of which she was a 75 year member. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marie was born on the McClure farm south of Dallas Center to Orville Ward and Mary Lucinda (Rathbun) McClure. She graduated from Dallas Center High School in 1944 and married Robert S. Ellis, Jr. on July 27, 1946. To this union three children were born, Ross, Jim and Janet. Together they farmed for 37 years. After Robert's death in 1981 Marie moved to Spurgeon Manor Village, where she was an employee of Spurgeon Manor for 18 years, serving as Assistant Activity Director and Certified Nurse's Assistant. As a hobby and her mission Marie helped senior citizens in their homes with cleaning, medications, personal care and driving them to their appointments. Her other hobbies included music and singing in the Presbyterian Church choir for over 70 years. Marie loved all sports, especially basketball and spending time with her family. She volunteered at Spurgeon Manor as a guild member.

Marie is survived by her children, Ross (Marilyn) Ellis of Thousand Oaks, CA and Janet (Craig) Hougham of West Des Moines, daughter-in-law Pat Ellis of Broomfield, CO; grandchildren, Lara Workman, Scott and Cindy Ellis, Mandy Ellis, Jared and Mike Hougham, Scott and Casondra Bankson; seven great grandchildren; and her siblings, Margaret (Orville) Wagner and Harold (Joan) McClure, both of Dallas Center; and her sisters-in-laws, Eloise McClure of Chandler, AZ and Betty McClure of Dallas Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Spurgeon Manor or Iowa Hospice.
