Obituary

Marilyn Jean Schwarz passed away on June 16, 2006 at Kava- naugh House on 56th Street. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 10th and Pleasant in Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to the Des Moines Symphony or the Sigma Alpha Iota Alumnae Chapter for the endowment of the Kathleen Davison Award Fund.

Marilyn was born September 11, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Earle and Hilma (Erickson) Spencer. She graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a BA and from Drake University with an MME. She married Malcolm Schwarz on October 17, 1953 in Hopkins, Minnesota. He preceded her in death in the year 2000.

Marilyn was employed as a music teacher in Jackson, Minnesota for two years and in the Des Moines Public Schools for 42 years. Her many student teachers held her in high esteem as a supervising teacher. She belonged to First United Methodist Church, Sigma Alpha Iota, Delta Kappa Gamma, DMARSPA, and Book Club. She was a former first vice-president of the Des Moines Symphony Board and served as a volunteer teacher at Woodlawn School after retiring.

Marilyn was a beautiful, giving person, a devoted wife, teacher and friend who loved children, music, teaching, reading, antiquing, sewing and needlework. Those who knew her will always have wonderful memories of this extraordinary woman. She had many friends and was dearly loved.

Visitation will be held at Iles Funeral Homes/Westover Chapel on Tuesday, June 20 from 5 to 7 p.m., with burial on Thursday, June 22 at 1 p.m. in Welcome, Minnesota.
