Obituary

Marilyn Ebbert, 85, died May 2, 2010, at Mercy Hospital of a sudden illness. Marilyn was born on October 10, 1924, at the family, farm home in rural Dakota City, NE, the daughter of Royal and Mildred Graham. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, IA. Following her graduation, at age 16, she taught at District 29 School in Waterbury, NE, a one room school house with students ranging from kindergarten through 8th grade. After a while Marilyn decided to attend the University of Nebraska where she received a BA and MBA in Sociology.

Marilyn worked as a Recreation Director at the Lincoln State Hospital for seven years before she decided to work abroad. She worked as an Air Force Service Club Director in Tripoli, where she met Edwin "Ted" Lester Ebbert. They were married June 3, 1954, and lived in a villa in Taguira. Ted's pilot career moved them around before they settled in South Sioux City, NE. After Marilyn and Edwin's divorce she and her two daughters moved to Sioux City, IA, where she worked as Executive Director at the Florence Crittenton Home for unwed mothers. After 25 years at Florence Crittenton she pursued a career in private, international adoptions. This provided her with magnificent traveling opportunities as she picked up and delivered bundles of joy to adoptive parents. In 2000 Marilyn retired and moved to Des Moines, IA, to be closer to her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Amy Lou Hill of Monroe, GA, and Rebecca Lynn Ladd of Des Moines, IA; five grandchildren, Paul Cale, Leah Mertz, Tell Shappley, Lucy Shappley and Brett Molden; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Cody, Rylie and Tabitha. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mildred Graham and her brother, Jim Graham, all of Dakota County, NE.
