Obituary

Mark S. Johnson, 55, died with his family and friends by his side, on Sunday, July 22, 2012, from non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He was born on October 8, 1956, in Spencer, Iowa to Jackie (Arrowood) and Donald A. Johnson. He graduated from Hoover High School in Des Moines in 1974 and was an undefeated State High School Wrestling champion that year. He served four years in the Army before earning degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and Grandview University, followed by a Master's of Education from Drake University. His passion for working with youth was illustrated through his 18 years as a resource teacher at Saydel High School and his 28 years as a wrestling coach at Hoover, Johnston, Saydel, and Urbandale.

Mark married his best friend, Camille, in 1981, and together they raised three children: Courtney, Derek, and Seth. He loved his family more than anything else. He spent many fun years with his children coaching them in baseball and soccer, and he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Mark followed his dreams, went fishing every chance he got, and he was always up for a good game of cribbage with long-time friends and family or watching old John Wayne movies. He was especially fond of family gatherings, where he would cook up a big pot of chicken and noodles or have a fish fry. Mark always had a joke ready for you and always went that extra mile for his family and friends. He was a big man with an even bigger heart.

Left to cherish Mark's memory are his loving wife of 31 years, Camille (Campbell) Johnson and their three children: Courtney, Derek and Seth, all of Urbandale; sisters, Christine (Harold) Nelson and Joan (Geoff) Smith; brother, Jay Johnson; and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and his grand-dog Rufio. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Jackie and Jessie Cox; father, Donald; and brother, Mike Johnson.

Visitation will be held at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25th with a Vigil at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26th at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Please direct memorials to AA-Des Moines or to the family to benefit wrestlers of Hoover High School. Online condolences may be made at IlesCares.com.
