Obituary

Marleen L. (Knapp) Goin, 86, passed away peacefully, August 24, 2024 at Trinity Center at Luther Park Community in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Iles Dunn’s Chapel, 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, at Iles Dunn’s Chapel, with burial following at 11 a.m., at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter, Iowa.

Marleen was born November 16, 1937 in Adaza, Iowa to LeRoy and Lita (Johnson) Knapp. The family lived in Omaha for a short time then moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where she met Bernard Holst. They were married and had four children, Edward, Rhonda, John and Julia. They made their home in Webster County, Iowa. Marleen and Bernard later divorced. In the late 1990’s - 2000’s, she served as a chaplain for Prison Ministries in Southern Texas.

Marleen married Donald E. Goin and they resided at the Stover Heights Mobile Home Park in Des Moines. They were active at the Senior Center on 2nd Avenue in Des Moines and attended a church on SE 6th Street. They loved their cat Sammy, who they adopted together. Donald passed away in 2017.

Marleen is survived by her four children, Edward Holst of Humboldt, Iowa, Rhonda (Gerry) Thiele of Holland, Michigan, John (Karen) Holst and Julia (David) Millard both of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; and numerous great and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald.
