Obituary

Marvin D. Snider, 85, of Madrid, IA (formerly of Woden, IA) passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011. Funeral and visitation will both be held at the Brandt Woodward Funeral Home in Woodward Iowa. Visitation is from 2 - 4 p.m. Sunday, January 30. The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 31, followed by a military burial at the Liberty-Cass-Township Cemetery.

Marvin Dean Snider was born to Earl LeRoy and Cora Ethel (Dugan) Snider on March 10, 1925 in Madrid, IA. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1942 after which Marvin enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Tripoli and then the USS Ticonderoga during WWII. Marvin was united in marriage to his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Kathryn Harnish on April 13, 1945 in King County, Washington.They were blessed with four children.

Marvin attended Upper Iowa University where he earned his bachelor's degree in education. He taught math for many years beginning in Albia in 1953. He then studied at Iowa State University and Drake University before receiving his master's degree from University of Wisconsin at Madison. (Go Badgers!) Marvin then served as a principal in several school districts before becoming Superintendent of Schools for the Woden-Crystal Lake School district in 1975 until he retired in 1987.

Marvin was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many hours fishing the area lakes and rivers. He and Mary also enjoyed camping and traveled through much of the U.S. with their family. While not traveling, they enjoyed watching and feeding the goldfinches in his yard. Marvin was also always up for a good game of cards including pinochle, hossenpfeffer and cribbage.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Marjorie McDaniel. Those left to cherish Marvin's memory are: his wife Mary, his sister Bonnie Klatt of Madrid, his children Ron Snider and Ann Meixner of Sioux Falls SD, Sharon and Pat Vaughn of Tulsa OK, Dave and Carol Snider of Forest City, IA, Earl and Betty Snider of Harvey IA; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grand children and 5 great-great grand children.
