Marvin Fred, the son of Oscar Edward and Grace Alberta Carlson, was born on July 10, 1923, in Boone County, Iowa. He passed away at his home on September 2, 2009 from natural causes, at the age of 86. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 pm, Friday, September 4, 2009 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid. Funeral services will be 10 am, Saturday, September 5, 2009 at St. John's with burial following at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Madrid.

Marvin graduated from Kelley High School in 1941. He entered the US Army in September 1944 and served his country proudly during World War II. He was awarded a Bronze Star and honorably discharged in November 1946.

Marvin and Leora Nervig were united in marriage on May 1, 1948 in Grundy Center, Iowa. They had seven children. Several years later Marvin made a promise to his best friend Dick Rinker, and the family welcomed Sue as their eighth child. Marvin and Leora farmed in Boone County all of their lives, eventually purchasing the farm that once belonged to Marvin's parents. Marvin was a dedicated steward of the soil. Working tirelessly seemed to be what kept him going to the very end of his life. He valued and modeled a strong work ethic, honesty, humility, and compassion for others. He also demonstrated great pride in his country and in his service to help maintain our country's freedom. His Army buddies have been life-long friends. Marvin enjoyed his family and was never too busy to teach his grandchildren and great-grandchildren about the finer working of John Deere farming. Marvin loved his family, the earth, pie, and homemade ice cream!

Marvin is survived by his children: Ron (Vicki) of Madrid; David (Debbie) of Camdenton, Missouri; Darrell of Madrid; Janet (Jim) Hurley of Shell Rock; Rhonda (Dennis) Smeltzer of Woodward; Patti (Randy) Pruismann of Bondurant; and Sue (Mike) Rinker Nowels of Madrid; grandchildren include: Hollie (Jay) Wicker, Bret Carlson, Whitney Carlson, Michelle (Jon) Holmes, Nichole (JD) Hartung, BJ (Jolynne) Carlson, Alicia (Jeremiah) Smith, Tim (Amy) Hurley, Staci (Dave) Becker, Ryne Pruismann, Andrew Pruismann, Ryley Pruismann, Natalie Nowels, and Lisa Nowels.
