Obituary

Mary Ann Schneider Hanger, 58, died peacefully at her sister's home in Eau Claire, Wi., on Saturday, February 3, 2007, with her family surrounding her and with the compassionate care of St. Joseph's Hospice.

Mary, born May 28, 1948, at St. Clare Hospital in Monroe, Wi., to Herman and Thelma (Hagen) Schneider, was baptized at Luther Valley Church. When Mary was three and a half years old, her mother unexpectedly passed away. In December of 1953, Mary's father remarried Gladys Brunsvold; and they moved to Janesville, where Mary attended the Janesville Public Schools. She loved her friends at school, and at Faith Lutheran Church, where she was actively involved in band, orchestra, student council and countless junior choir and Luther League activities. Following her graduation in 1966 from Janesville Senior High School, Mary left for Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Luther was definitely "the right fit" for her. In fact, her years at Luther were years she cherished forever.

While working in Iowa, she met her future husband, Herbert Hanger; and they were married on April 26, 1975. Since that time, they made their home in Des Moines, Iowa. For the past 23 years, Mary worked in the travel industry as a travel agent. She loved her work, and truly enjoyed the office camaraderie and positive relationships which developed with her long-time clients.

Mary opened her home, not to mention her heart, to family and friends where she lovingly prepared meals and entertained with ease. Her creativity was clearly visible in her food preparation as well as in her gardening and sewing projects.

Mary is survived by her mother, Gladys Schneider of Janesville; sister, Barbara Cizek and brother-in-law, David, of Eau Claire; niece, Erica Cizek-Vogen and Greg Vogen of Woodbury, Mn.; nephew, Nathan Cizek of Chicago, Il.; niece, Maria Cizek of Eau Claire; sister-in-law, Betty Reckers of La Quinta, Ca.; step-daughter, Lorrie Gibbs of Palmdale, Ca.; and many extended family members and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Herb.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, at Luther Valley Church in Beloit, Wi. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Burial will be in Luther Valley Cemetery. A memorial service will also be held in Des Moines, Iowa, at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 9.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Home Health/Hospice, 2661 County Highway I, Chippewa Falls, WI 54729, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of choice.

We will always cherish Mary's unconditional love, her willingness to share her time and many talents, and her sense of good humor, quick wit and sparkling eyes.
