Mary Cecilia (Blair) Johnson died surrounded by family March 26, 2009. Funeral services will be held 10 am Monday, March 30, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines. Graveside services will be held 1:30pm Monday at Waukee Cemetery in Waukee. Following graveside services there will be a Celebration of Mary's Life at the old St. Boniface Hall in Waukee from 2 to 7pm.

Mary was born August 31, 1934 in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. She attended the University of South Dakota where she met Charles O. Johnson. They were wed June 14, 1954. The family moved first to Salt Lake City, UT while Charles attended medical school, then to Des Moines for his internship at Mercy Hospital. She provided him support during his medical practice. Mary gained many friends through his practice and her involvement at St Pius X Church in Urbandale and St Boniface Church in Waukee.

Mary was an avid antique button collector and a nationally recognized expert on 17th Century buttons. She was a member of the Iowa State Button Society and the National Button Society for several years and served in several posts for both societies. Mary traveled extensively, as her hobby turned into her business. Later in life, she decided it was time to pick up a new hobby and began playing golf, giving her and her family great enjoyment.

Mary was blessed with a large family and enjoyed spending time with them. She is survived by her children Marie , West Des Moines, Carla (Bill Richardson), Baltimore, MD, Kurt (Joyce), Panora, Michelle (John McManus), Bondurant, Bob (Merry), Earlham, Chris (Barb), Dallas Center, Patty (Steve Pauly), Winterset, Joe, West Des Moines, Theresa (Ric Cortez), Olathe, KS, and Jim, Williamsburg. Mary and Charles also served as Foster Parents to Dianne Wood, Mingo who has been a member of the family since 1961, as well as her children Cathy, Michael and Michelle, and their 7 children. Mary is also survived by 19 grandchildren and her brothers John Blair, Seattle, WA, David Blair, Sierra V ista, AZ, Tom Blair, San Francisco, CA, and sister Pat Blair, Mitchell, SD; and many nieces and nephews who were close to her heart.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Charles, and parents Grace and F.L. (Dutch) Blair, and three grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Sunday at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Catholic Charities.
