In 1945, she married the late Lt. Joseph L. Sullivan, a Navy Air Force pilot who later established a dentistry practice in Des Moines. Dr. Sullivan died in 1988.

The Sullivan family moved in 1968 to a farm south of Adel where they raised purebred Angus cattle. During the 1970s and early 1980s Mary and her family were active in Polk County 4H and the Flying Hooves Drill Team. In 1983, Mary and her daughter Carol moved to Phoenix, AZ. They returned to Des Moines in 1989 when Mary married James B. Cooney, a retired newspaper editor.

Mary was a member of several organizations, including the Holy Trinity Women’s Club, the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary of Iowa, the White Pole Road Questers Club, and the Catholic Women’s League. She formerly belonged to Des Moines Golf & Country Club and enjoyed golf as long as her health permitted. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and also enjoyed embroidering, gardening and shopping year round for Christmas and birthday presents for her family.
