Obituary

Mary Dawson Dunbar, Des Moines, passed away on March 5, following a stroke. Born on April 10, 1937 in Evanston, IL, Mary lived in Des Moines since 1970.

During that time, she touched many lives throughout the community: first as a mother; then as a pioneering businesswoman with Kirke-Van Orsdel, Bank of America, Waukee State Bank and as an early supporter of the Young Women's Resource Center; and most recently as a volunteer in her retirement, including her service on behalf of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, the Des Moines and Waukee Public Libraries, the Des Moines Art Center, and Plymouth Congregational Church. Mary was known for her energy, cheerfulness, holiday spirit, perennial gardens, and hospitality.

Mary is survived by her husband of 31 years, Bill Dunbar; four daughters, Martha MacKinnon, Urbandale; Mary Sharpe, Grayslake, IL; Katherine MacKinnon and Elizabeth Shors, both of Minneapolis; two step-children, Pat Dunbar, San Francisco; Chip Dunbar, Brookfield, IL; and ten grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 16 at 11 am in Plymouth Congregational Church.

Please direct memorials in lieu of flowers to Plymouth Congregational Church or Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.
