Obituary

Mary Janelle Finnegan, 78, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA, after a three-year battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, April 1, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, IA 50265, where a rosary will follow at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, also at St. Francis. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, 801 19th Street, West Des Moines, IA 50265.

Mary was born on September 12, 1934, in Jefferson, IA, to Walter P. and Victorine C. (Minnihan) Finnegan. She was raised there and attended school at St. Angela Academy, now known as Kuemper Catholic School, in Carroll. While at school, she excelled at music, an All-State clarinetist who also taught French horn, in addition to playing on the school basketball team.

In 1952, Mary moved to Des Moines to work at Traveler's Insurance. She married Leo Kordick, and to this union was brought six children, Karen Nichols, Lori (Chris) Aldinger, twins Dorothy (Jeff) Hentges and Dan (Barb) Kordick, Janelle (Rob) Boyd and Pat (KC) Gerlitz.

Mary loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, a loyal and proud attendee of many plays, band and choir concerts, and athletic events. She was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Francis, as well as an accomplished candy-maker, expertly fielding the many requests from friends and family that inevitably arrived during the holidays, including her cousin/"sister", Anne, who was very special to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald; grandson, Charles Hentges; beloved Bob; and numerous friends and family. Mary is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Ashley, Andi and Ryan Nichols; Amanda, Alex, Nick and Pete Aldinger; Madeline Hentges; Robbie and Lacey Boyd; and Jade and Justice Gerlitz, and many dear friends and family.

The family is deeply grateful to the staff at Martina Place and Mercy Hospice, for the compassionate, loving care Mary and her daughters received during Mary's final weeks.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Finnegan's name to St. Francis of Assisi Church.
