Obituary

Mary Jean Johnson, 74, died of complications of congestive heart failure Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Mary was born in Des Moines on September 17, 1931 to Eldon and Genevieve (Sloan) Harvey. She graduated from East High School and lived in Newton from 1968 to 1973 before returning to Des Moines. She was employed as a motor route carrier for the Des Moines Register in the Ankeny area for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had been a Des Moines Welcome Wagon Lady.

Mary is best known for her love of baking. Not only did she bake daily for her family, but her entries at the Iowa State Fair earned her many awards. Her Cinnamon Rolls were "Grand Champions." She used her baked goods to reach out in kindness to friends and neighbors. When Mary came to visit, she brought comfort and "comfort food" as well.

Mary enjoyed meeting new people. With her sense of humor and out-going, friendly manner she could relate to everyone she met.

Mary is survived by her seven children, Linda (Rick Davis) Sutton of Indianola, Michael Johnson of Des Moines, Janice (Paul) DePhillips of Nashville, TN, Pat Johnson of Pleasant Hill, Tim (Kim) Johnson of Des Moines, Dan (Kathy) Johnson of Omaha, Mary (Bill) Rooney of Altoona; 17 grandchildren, Shawn (Cheri) Sutton, Megan DePhillips, Katie DePhillips, Sara DePhillips, John DePhillips, Hannah DePhillips, Annie DePhillips, Anna Johnson, Aaron Johnson (currently serving in Iraq), Christopher Johnson, Thomas Johnson, Tucker Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Jenna Rooney, Kaylee Rooney, Patrick Rooney, Jamie Rooney; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Bailey; three sisters, Lucille Farrell of Des Moines, Mildred (Dean) Gates of Ankeny, Dorene (Larry) Stevens of Des Moines; and one brother, Robert Harvey of Hawaii. She was formerly married to James H. Johnson od Tucson, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Jackie Harvey. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Iles Funeral Homes, Grandview Park Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in care of Mike Johnson for the education of her grandchildren.
