Obituary

Mary Joyce Perry (nee’ Logan), age 85, passed away peacefully at Holland Farms Assisted Living facility on April 22, 2025, in Norwalk, Iowa.

Born on May 27, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, Mary lived a vibrant spirited life rooted deeply in her community and passions.

The only child of Beulah and Ralph Logan, Mary grew up in Des Moines, where she attended and graduated from East High School. It was during these formative years that she discovered her love for the arts. Her talent for drawing and painting blossomed in art class, earning her several awards. Many of her cherished works of art still adorn the walls of her home-a lasting testament to her creativity and devotion. Mary’s early years were filled with activity and joy. She was a proud member of Girl Scouts and Brownies, and took years of dance lessons, performing in numerous recitals throughout the area. These experiences laid the foundation for life filled with movement, expression, and connection.

One of Mary’s greatest passions was the love of roller skating. She began skating competitively in the 1960’s and continued into the early 2000’s! Her commitment to the sport earned her a trove of trophies and medals over the decades. Roller skating wasn’t just a hobby-it was a defining part of who she was. It was at Tromer Roller Rink that Mary met Jimmy, the love of her life. Their shared love of skating sparked a romance that led to marriage on November 15,1957, at Des Moines Methodist Church. Their bond remained strong until Jimmy's passing 5 years ago, a loss that Mary carried with grace, dignity, and enduring love.

Professionally, Mary worked briefly at Dahl’s grocery store before embarking on a long-standing career with the State of Iowa. Her dedication to her work reflected her strong sense of responsibility and commitment.

Though Mary did not have children of her own, she had several nieces and nephews who she cared deeply for, however it was her neighbors who she considered her special family, those who shared everyday moments with her and brought warmth and love to her later years. Mary had an infectious spirit that made her a beloved friend and neighbor. She loved going out for lunch or dinner and never missed an opportunity to enjoy good company. Mary was the 50th person to become a member at Anytime Fitness, and went there religiously to work out . All the trainers loved her, and would even pick her up at Holland Farms to go for her workout!

Her affection for dogs was unmatched-there wasn’t a dog she didn’t adore! In fact, it is said she may have preferred them to people!

Visitation will take place from 10:00-11:00 am on Monday, April 28, 2025, at Iles Norwalk Chapel, 1020 Main Street, Norwalk, Iowa. Her funeral will begin at 11:00 am, followed by lunch and then interment at Waukee Cemetery.
