Mary Kathryn Snider, 88, of Woden, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in her home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 18 at Iles Funeral Home, followed by interment at the Liberty-Cass township cemetery.

Mary Kathryn Snider was born to Herman and Vera (Coffield) Harnish in Dayton, Ohio on October 22, 1926. She was in California during most of her youth until she attended high school in Port Orchard, Washington. She left school to work in the Naval shipyards during the war. She helped the war effort by not only welding in the shipyards, but also by volunteering over 500 hours in the watch towers watching for enemy planes.

It was in Washington that Mary met Marvin Snider, her husband of 66 years. During Marvin's teaching career, Mary chose to be a stay at home mom for much of the marriage to raise their 4 children. Together they lived in Albia, Woodward, Ogden, Thorton, Dolliver, and Bayard Iowa as well as Yuba City, California and Port Orchard, Washington until they finally moved to Woden, Iowa.

In addition to being a homemaker, Mary worked briefly as an elevator operator at a a hotel, for 3M, and Bournes in Ames, Iowa. She also worked for Woodward State Hospital, where she earned her GED in 1968. In her free time, Mary was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, and was a great cook. She even played on a bowling team for a while. She and Marvin also hosted card parties with friends. Later in life, Mary took up quilting and, with Marvin, had a quilting business.

Mary was a good and kind person. When she battled lung cancer and macular degeneration, she did so without complaint and with grace and humor. She remembered everything you told her and loved to hear about what was going on in the lives of all the members of her family from young to old. She genuinely cared about people and never wanted to be a burden or bother to others. She was kind and generous and forgiving to anyone who needed it. She enjoyed laughing and playing games with her family, making every visit special and fun. She and Marvin took many trips with their children and grandchildren in their camper. Through it all, her greatest love and joy of her life was her family.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bart, her sister NinaWard, and her beloved husband Marvin. Those left to cherish her memory are: her sisters Nancy Graham and Joyce Mietzner, her sister-in-law Beverly Harnish, her four children, Ron Snider and Ann Meixner of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Sharon and Pat Vaughan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dave and Carol Snider of Forest City, Iowa and Earl and Betty Snider of Hollendale, Minnesota, her 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts will be given to the Iowa Library for the Blind.
