Mary Swatta Obituary

Mary Louise Sheridan Swatta, 100, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on September 6, 2023 at Calvin Community from Alzheimer’s. Mary was born in Des Moines on October 25, 1922 to Martin and Annie Leonard Sheridan, natives of Ireland. She was big sister to Bob and Catherine. Mary attended St Peter Grade School and was a proud 1940 graduate of East High School. She married Mark Swatta in 1946 and had 4 daughters. She was employed at Northwestern Bell for over 30 years. After retirement, she enjoyed her snowbird days in Mesa, Arizona, exploring her genealogy roots and volunteering to teach English to others. Mary was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church active in many church functions but the one closest to her heart was collecting and delivering food to the Iowa Food Pantry.

Mary was greeted in heaven by her parents, Martin and Annie, her brother Bob, sister Catherine and her daughter Mary Ellen. She will be always loved and missed by her daughters Catherine Swatta, Peggy Shattuck (Ray) and Patti Joelson (Skip) her grandchildren Michelle Shattuck (Brandon) and Sean Joelson (Sidney), her good friend, Sandy Lang and 6 great grandchildren.

She is thankful to God for all the good things she has received. A celebration of life will be held at Iles Grandview Park Funeral Home on September 20, 2023 at 10 AM.

Private interment will be at Glendale Cemetery. We request no flowers. Memorials can be directed to the food pantry or favorite charity in memory of Mary
