Obituary

Mary Rose Smith Clayton Van Hamme, 90, peacefully completed her journey to her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.

The visitation will be at Iles Funeral Home - Westover Chapel at 6337 Hickman Road on Thursday, November 8, 2007 from 4 to 7 pm with family present 5 to 7 pm to visit with friends. Christian vigil service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Our Lady of Peace Chapel at the Bishop Drumm Care Center, 5837 Winwood Drive, Johnston at 9:30 am on Friday, November 9, 2007.

Mary was born in Cumming, Iowa, on March 7, 1917 to Charles Joseph Smith and Mary Frances Sheehey Smith. She attended Martensdale High School, then moved to Des Moines to continue her education at AIB. She was a secretary for the Federal Housing Administration, and then after completing Legal Secretary schooling. Mary worked for the Social Security Administration until taking early retirement.

In addition to raising two children, Mary enjoyed doing all kinds of crafts including knitting doilies and Afghans for her family. She also volunteered for the Alter and Rosary Society at St. Pius Church (where she was a founding member of the parish), the Bishop Drumm Guild, the Mercy Hospital Guild, and the Community Playhouse. Mary also enjoyed playing bingo and cards, being around her many family and friends and traveling in the US and Europe.

Mary is survived by her son Larry Clayton, son-in-law Pat McGivney, step-daughters Karen Van Hamme and Kathy Van Hamme; grandchildren Jeff McGivney and Doni McGivney, Erin Thornburgh and Pat Thornburgh, Lori Dale and Kenny Dale, Emily Clayton and Amanda Holdmeyer and Eric Holdmeyer; great grandchildren, Travis Thornburgh and Trevor Thornburgh, Gavin McGivney, Kaleb and Liam Dale and Keegan Holdmeyer and Shay Holdmeyer; her sister Genevieve Johnson, her brothers Charles Smith and Richard Smith; many cousins, nieces, nephews and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Robert Howard Clayton and second husband Rene Van Hamme, daughter Rosemary Rita Clayton McGivney, brother Robert Smith and sister Dorothy Moore.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kavanagh House and Martina Place.
