Obituary

Marybelle S. McDonald, 83, passed away on July 15, 2011. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 18, at the Rising Sun Church of Christ in Pleasant Hill. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church.

Marybelle was born on December 14, 1927, to Luella (Brigham) and August Rudolph Stanley in Toledo, Oregon. She attended Burgis Elementary School in Toledo, OR. Marybelle was in high school during WWII and she and a friend spent many hours in the town steeple watching for enemy planes coming across the bay. She graduated from Toledo High in 1946. During her senior year of high school she became the advertising manager for a 3-week evangelistic meeting at her church, the Toledo Church of Christ. It was during that time that she decided to go to Bible College at Northwest Christian College in Eugene, OR in the fall of 1946. While attending Bible College, she married Robert A. McDonald on June 17, 1949. Marybelle graduated in 1950 with her Bachelor of Theology degree and taught religious education at the college for one year until Robert was graduated.

Marybelle served in churches, along with her husband, Robert, in Myrtle Point, OR, Seaside, OR and Toledo, OR. The moved to Iowa in 1958 where Robert graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Drake Seminary, serving in Collins Church of Christ during this time. They then moved to Davenport for three years with the Cedar Memorial Christian Church. Their next move was Grangeville, Idaho and four years later they moved to Knoxville, IA. Marybelle started teaching in Des Moines in 1971 in Walker Elementary and then the next 19 years at Mitchell Elementary. She retired in 1991.

Both Robert and Marybelle enjoyed traveling and have been in northern and southern Europe, Italy, and many of the Islands, as well as Canada and much of the United States.

She will be missed by her children, JoLynne of Arlington, VA, Mark Stanley of Urbandale, and JanaLu of West Des Moines; two grandchildren, Christopher (Anja) Whitehead and his children, Keelin, Liam, and Murray; and Carrie Proffitt and her children, Hunter and Wyatt. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, George and Gordon Stanley.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rising Sun Church of Christ.
