Matthew H. DeHaven died December 18, 2009 at Mercy Hospice from a brain tumor.

He was born on July 12, 1959, in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Carroll County High School in 1977 and attended Hiram College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1981. In 1989, he graduated from Des Moines University as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing his internship and residency at Des Moines General Hospital, he joined the emergency room physician group at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in 1992. At the time of his death, he was a physician with Health System Emergency Physicians and practiced in the emergency rooms at Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He was a member of the American Osteopathic Association, and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. From 1984 to 1989, he was a volunteer firefighter for the Urbandale Fire Department. From 2002 to 2008, he was the Medical Director of the DMACC EMS Education Program. In 2003, he became Medical Director for the Iowa Department of Public Health Disaster Medical Assistance Team C. In 2005, he traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a member of the Iowa First Response Team to assist with recovery efforts after hurricane Katrina. He was an adult leader for Boy Scout Troop 188 in Ankeny.

Matt's pride and joy was his family. Many of his activities involved his wife and children. One of his greatest pleasures was to spend time with his family sharing a meal and conversation. He had a sense of adventure and liked traveling with his family. An excellent cook, he loved to spend time in the kitchen preparing meals and on the patio grilling. He enjoyed the water and spent time boating. He rowed with the Des Moines Rowing Club and built a small boat, an Annapolis wherry, to row. Bicycling was another activity he took pleasure in and he road on several RAGBRAIs with family and friends. He had an appreciation of all genres music and attended Des Moines Symphony concerts with his family. He was an avid reader and a life long learner.

Matt married Karen Schaefer in 1990. He is survived by Karen and their two children, Catie DeHaven and Peter DeHaven, all of Ankeny. He is also survived by his mother Barbara DeHaven, his brother Steve (Jane) DeHaven both of Des Moines, and his sister Cathy (Dave) Swanson of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his father E. Thomas DeHaven on February 4, 2007.

Per Matt's wishes his body has been cremated. A memorial visitation will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines on Monday, December 21 beginning at 4:00 p.m. followed by a Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

One of Matt's dreams for retirement was to spend time working with Doctors Without Borders. Also, Matt had always wanted to be involved with Habitat for Humanity. In the last year, he was able to so with his daughter Catie through Dowling Catholic High School. To support Matt's dreams, memorial contributions can be made in his name to Doctors Without Borders or Habitat For Humanity.
