Obituary

Melvin Elton Wiles, 100, was born on a farm south of Grimes, IA, May 5, 1911, and passed away July 10 at Legacy Pointe in Waukee. He was the third born of eleven children to Leslie and Maude Cruikshank Wiles. He finished up his schooling and graduated from Valley High School in 1928.

Melvin went into the trucking business after high school hauling almost anything, but mostly coal. It was about that time that a cute, red-headed lass caught his eye and a marriage partnership of 77 years with Eunice Hyde came about.

Melvin found his niche in the early 40's back in Grimes, in partnerships with Standard Oil and with Phillips 66 tank wagon service. Later he went on his own, and that lasted until a family corporation was formed in the 60's with wife, Eunice, and son, Mel Jr. Business was good and lasted until the untimely death of Mel Jr. in 1977. Being a strong family man it was just too much to bear; and so in 1978, Melvin stepped out of his tank wagon for the last time.

He was a dedicated man, first to his family, and then to his company, customers, church, town and most anyone he ever met. Melvin was a long-time member of the Grimes Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club and he also served on the Grimes City Council and Fire Department.

Survivors include daughters, Beverly Tarlton (Dick) of Clive and Karen Roth (Ron) of West Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Karen Wiles of West Des Moines; sisters, Ruth Spencer and Bonnie Strand Knepper, both from the Des Moines area; plus seven grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Preceding Melvin in death were his parents; wife, Eunice; son, Melvin Jr.; four brothers, John, Earl, Leslie and Lloyd; and four sisters, Leila Thompson, Maxine Jones, Mildred Loll and Dorothy Beanblossom.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at Legacy Pointe for all of their compassionate and expert care.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, at the First Presbyterian Church in Grimes. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow services at Sunnyhill Cemetery in Grimes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church, Lions Club or the Grimes Fire and Rescue Unit.
