Mrs. Meriam D. Rosenthal, 80, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House on 56th Street following a courageous and inspirational battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday, April 24 at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Blvd. Burial will be at Jewish Glendale Cemetery followed by a meal with the family at the synagogue.

Meriam was born on August 16, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN to Joseph and Ida (Goldfarb) Greller and moved to Des Moines in 1930. She worked side by side with husband Leonard in operation of Suzette's Candies until 1971. She then worked 25 years for Brenton National Bank, retiring as Vice President in 1995 to care for Leonard during his own battle with cancer.

Meriam was an active member and served on the board of Tifereth Israel Synagogue. She was also a board member for the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, Jewish Federation and the National Conference of Community and Justice. Meriam continued her community service as a volunteer in the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Gift Shop, contributing over 2000 hours in the last five years.

Left to cherish Meriam's memory are her three children, Natalie Rosenthal (Ronald) Munkacsi of Sneads Ferry, NC, Gayle Rosenthal Canada of Des Moines and Joel Rosenthal (Johanna Mayer) of Half Moon Bay, CA; sister, Nancy Fleming of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Genesis, Jacob and Bill (Meghan) Canada; and two great grandchildren, Cameron and Caden Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; parents, Joseph Greller and Ida Greller Feintech; and brother, Martin Greller.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rosenthal (Cemetery and Scholarship) Fund at Tifereth Israel Synagogue or Kavanagh House on 56th Street.
