Merrill Dean “Swede” Johnson, 77, passed from this life on Thursday, September 15, 2005, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 19, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madrid. Interment with military rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post #5060 will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery, east of Madrid.

Swede was born on June 30, 1928 to Walter Henry and Minnie Cecelia Carlson Johnson in Madrid, IA. He attended Madrid High School. Swede was an army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1951, until he was honorably discharged on March 4, 1953. Swede married Margaret Maureen Good on June 25, 1955 in Madrid, where they made their home. Swede was employed with the former Beaver Valley Canning Co. in Grimes, as a truck driver for 30 years, until his retirement. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Men in Mission Club. Swede will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Maureen Johnson of Madrid; one daughter, Kimberly Miller and her husband Michael of Cheyenne, WY; four sisters, Vivian Cooley of Ft Dodge, IA, Darlene Johnson of Denver, CO, Pauline Barker of Conway, AK and Bonnie Napiwaski and her husband John of St. Paul, MN; one brother, Homer Johnson and his wife Mary Ann of Austin, TX; two grandsons, Jon and Chad Miller; several nieces and nephews; and a host of many other relatives and friends. Swede was preceded into eternal life by his parents; and one sister, Viola Plaggman.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday, September 18, at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
